following a problem with my machine I have had to reinstall some of my software including VAX (1287).
However, I do not get prompted to enter my key(s) and cannot access the options dialog to do so either.
I have tried reinstalling my 7.1 installation and upgrading to VAX but even this does not seem to work despite prompting for (and accepting my keys)
Any suggestions please. |

can you get to the VAX options dialog? if so what do you see on the About tab? specifically does it say that it is licensed to you?
it is possible your license key is still in the registry, so there is no need to re-enter it, hence this option is not available. |

No - I can only enable/disable VAX and there appears to be no difference between the two states.
having reinstallled several times I have tried to ensure that all identifiable registry entries are removed. |

all right, this sounds more serious than i first thought.
which IDE are you using? if you are using VS2003 do you have a VAssistX menu?
do you have a VAssistX toolbar? do you get any errors or warnings when you install VA? is VA listed as an installed addin? tools menu -> add-in manager in VS 2003 |

Did you allow VAX to reset custom Keybindings/Toolbar/Menu entries?
Without letting VAX do so during install, things might not work... |

I reinstalled once more to be sure.
Wasn't prompted about bindings etc. The system did not display any errors during install VS2003 - I do have a VAssistX Menu and Toolbar - but nothing seems to work on them. And yes VAX is listed in the Add-In Manager dialog

using a command prompt can you cd to the directory holding devenv.exe
C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\\Common7\\IDE
on my machine, and run the command:
devenv.exe /setup
it seems this tells the IDE to rebuild its commands table, which may reset some of your settings. hopefully this will fix VAX's integration into the IDE. |

*sigh* when VAX is first installed it should trigger a reset of the IDE, since this is required in order to correctly register its self. have you performed the test of uninstalling all listed versions VA, renaming any remaining VA sub-directories in program files, and searching for registry keys to delete before doing a clean install?
i mention renaming any existing sub-directories since this minimises the risk of the new install landing on the same hard disk sectors as the previous install. somewhat unlikely, but i have had such problems before myself. |

Is the checkbox to the left of VAX in the Manager dialog checked? Is the startup checkbox checked?
Something else to attempt would be to exit all IDE instances and do a regsvr32 of VA_X.dll and VAssistNet.dll.
The devenv /setup command appears to be doing what it needs to do since you are getting the VA menu and toolbar.
Any other non-default addins or packages installed?

Everything appears to be correct except VAX doesn't work as expected.
A fresh install ( to separate hard disk ) did not prompt for reset of bindings etc.. I then regsvr32 both VA_X.dll and VAssistNet.dll, the former prompting for a reset which I selected.
Still no show. The VAX menu/toobar do appear but when I clikc on Options I get nothing. |

If you're using WinNT 4, there's a known problem with the options dialog not working for VA versions after 1246. I forget the threads where it's discussed, but your problem sounds similar. There's a work around for that involves using the VAOpsWin.dll from 1246 after installing the more recent versions. |

filthyzombie, are you in email contact with support about this? I think there might have been a mix up about who you are. Can you divulge the user-part of your email address here please?

sean,
I have indeed contacted support (as you suggested in an earlier post).
I sent my (current) licence info as requested and recieved a brand new key.
My preferred emailaddress (for communication with yourselves) is visualassist@*** but the email would probably have been from Warpish@***

I have tried various combinations of uninstall/(re)install with and without clearing the registry and still no joy.
VA_X.dll nevers seems to get registered (unless I do it manually). The only options on the VAX Menu are Enable/Disable and Options - neither of which seem to work.
At no time have I been able to enter a (new or otherwise) key. |

Do you install VA from the same account that you run it in? Or do you install using an admin account and run as a non-admin user? |

I have the same problem. VAX doesn't show any window when I click 'VAX options' menu item. This problem occurs when I uninstall 1418 and re-install 1301. I have two version valid key and it maybe is the reason of the problem. I guess there is a registration bug in the VA_X.dll. Few day ago, I send my question to [email protected] and didn't get solution to solve this probelm. I think they are fixed this problem ASAP. ^^"

what exactly did you do? on a win2k machine with VC6 and VS 2003 + VAX 1418 installed i have just uninstalled VAX 1418, and then installed VAX 1301.
when i then ran VS 2003 it prompted me to enter my VAX key. having done this VAX is working fine for me.
obviously there is a problem somewhere, but more details may help us pin down exactly what is going wrong, and why. |

Have you tried entering the license information directly into the registry?
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Whole Tomato\\Visual Assist X] "UserName"="Line1 of your license" "UserKey"="Line2 of your license"
Edit: Do not do this.

My problems (see other forum) seem similar to the ones described in this thread.
Can someone please let us know how to COMPLETELY uninstall VAX by hand?
I tried uninstalling and removing all registry keys I could find but no luck...
Thanks,
Rog. |

Are any of you hitting escape while the IDE is starting up? Like when the VS splash screen is displayed? It can't be dismissed with a press of the escape key - it is not a dialog. The escape key stays in the message queue until the VA Buy/Try dialog is displayed - but the press of the escape closes it before it is even drawn.
So far, that's the only way I've been able to reproduce a situation in which VA is properly listed in the add-in manager and the VA menu is available but with most items disabled and the non-disabled items non-functional.

My install problems are solved. Thanks to the fantastic support of Sean. I now have build 1301 working and will patiently wait for a next build.
I'll leave it up to him if he wants to post the details of the solution here.
